Developing skills and knowledge
Developing skills and knowledge is worked up over time. To help with your tasks, you can download the following documents as resources.

F/Stop Chart
The relationship between light and depth of field and is controlled by the aperture of the camera. When the numbers change to a smaller number the apaeture is open (eg: f/1.0), creating lighter and a shallow depth of field. This allows a longer focal point and more light, hence why the background is blurred.

The higher the f/stop (eg: f/22) number creates a deep depth of field and a sharper image all round.

Understanding Balance with the Exposure Triangle
The Exposure Triangle helps us to understand the f/stop, ISO (film speed) and shutter speed to use to gain the correct exposure.
Whilst this is the case, experimenting with alteration of the f/stop may cause a 'happy accident'. Rules were meant to be broken so try out the change of a setting manually. The under or over exposure may provide the look you were after.

Rule of thirds
Generally the rule of thirds is a sound composition guide by adding textures, shape, colour and lines to combine to create a well-balanced image.

As this is a good guide to start with, once you get the hang of the two-thirds rule, often rules are made to be broken.
